Remove background from photos of people
Cut people out of photos and save a transparent PNG, or swap in a white, black or custom color background. Runs entirely in your browser — the photo is never uploaded.
Files stay in this browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server. The engine and portrait model (~30MB) download once, then are cached. Model: MODNet (Apache-2.0).
How to use
- Drop or paste a photo of a person.
- The background is removed automatically (checkerboard = transparent).
- Optionally pick white, black or a custom color, then download the PNG.
Limitations
This is a people-only model, not a product cutout tool. Photos larger than 2560px on the long edge are downscaled before processing.
FAQ
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The MODNet portrait-matting model (Apache-2.0) runs in your browser. Only the engine and model files come from a CDN; your photo never leaves the device.
Does it work on products, pets or logos?
The model is trained for people (selfies, portraits, profile photos). Objects, animals and text may keep some background or lose parts. Portraits give the best results.
Hair edges look rough
It does strand-level soft matting plus edge color decontamination (removes background color bleeding into hair). Use Edge zoom to inspect at 4×. When hair and background are nearly the same color, some flyaways may fade.
Why is the first run slower?
The first time, the engine and portrait model (~30MB total) download once. After that they load from the browser cache and a photo takes a few seconds.
Can I make a white background for an ID photo?
Yes. Pick White, download the PNG, then size it in Passport photo size. Always check the issuing agency’s official rules.
